The locals rescued the daughter, who was seen standing near the parapet of the well. The suicide occurred following the theft of a two-sovereign gold chain from a nearby house where Bindu used to work.She had admitted to the theft and claimed that the gold chain was pawned to clear off her debts.Bindu had agreed to get back the chain and return it to the owner when the Palakkad North police summoned her. She was supposed to go to the police station by 11 am on Monday. According to the police, Bindu had pawned the chain to repay the debt incurred owing to the hospitalisation of her husband Ganesh, who is reportedly a drunkard.Ganesh used to abuse and physically assault her after getting drunk. The locals said that, even on Sunday, the couple had quarrelled.
