Ludhiana: A woman, allegedly involved in desecrating the Sikh holy book, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants at Ghwaddi village in Ludhiana on Tuesday, police said. The deceased, who has been identified as Balwinder Kaur, was out on bail, cops said.
Kaur was returning home in an auto-rickshaw after paying obeisance at Gurudwara Alamgir, some 20 kms from the village, when two motorcyclists stopped the auto and fired at her from a close range. They later fled, police said, adding that Kaur died on the spot.
The woman was arrested on October 18 last year, for the allegedly desecrating the Sikh holy book in Ghwaddi village. She was a 'sewadar' in the village Gurudwara. Kaur was thrashed by villagers, and police escorted her to the crime scene in Ghwaddi village on October 20.
In another incident, around 10 to 12 armed people attacked the house of one Gurinderjit Singh alias Gaindu at village Malikpur on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday. They scaled the walls of the house and attacked the occupants with sharp edged weapons, police said.
In all, five persons received grievous injuries, and Gurinderjit later succumbed to his injuries in the Civil Hospital. The assailants came in a car and two bikes and escaped after the attack, said cops.
