THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chakshumathi Charitable Trust is organising a national-level workshop in the city on the use of new technology for the benefit of the blind. The workshop on ‘DAISY Books – Reading and Publishing,’ will begin at Hotel Classic Avenue, Thampanoor, at 10 am on Friday. The workshop will focus on Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY), a means of creating digital talking books for the blind. Until a few years ago, Braille books were the sole solace to the visually challenged. But their exorbitant price was one put off. By 1960, audio books arrived on the scene, but those too had their problems. The DAISY software, compared to the early audio books, are much more user-friendly, according to Chakshumathi. Social Welfare and Panchayat Minister M K Muneer will inaugurate the workshop. He will also honour the visually challenged Asna Asalam, winner of the Rajat Kamal for best child actress, on the occasion. Entry to the workshop is free. There will be accommodation for delegates coming from outside the district. For details, call 0471-3235484, 9946764459.
