A senior professor of IIT-Kanpur has died after suffering a cardiac arrest while he was delivering a lecture during an alumni meet at the institute. According to institute authorities, 53-year-old Sameer Khandekar collapsed on the dais while addressing the gathering on Friday.
Khandekar, who was the dean of student affairs and the head of the mechanical engineering department, was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Khandekar was reportedly diagnosed with high cholesterol levels about five years ago.
Khandekar was delivering a lecture when he felt severe chest pain and started sweating profusely, according to former IIT-Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar.
Before anyone could make sense of what was happening, he collapsed on the stage, Karandikar added.
Talking to news agency PTI over the phone from Delhi, Karandikar also expressed shock over Khandekar’s sudden demise, whom he described as an outstanding teacher and researcher.
He said the body has been kept at the IIT-Kanpur’s health centre and final rites would be performed only after the arrival of his only son Pravah Khandekar who is studying at Cambridge University.
