Defending champions England will look to finish their World Cup campaign on a high as they face Pakistan in their final league stage game on Saturday. Having won the competition in 2019, England were one of the favourites but it just didn’t go in their favour. It started with a loss to New Zealand and they failed to recover in the competition, losing to teams including India, Australia, South Africa and Afghanistan. Their only wins in the tournament came against Bangladesh and a returning Netherlands side. Being already eliminated from the tournament, the English team will look to seal a place in the Champions Trophy with a win on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s good start in the World Cup fell through quickly with successive losses against India, Australia, South Africa and Afghanistan. They went on to win their next games against Bangladesh and New Zealand, continuing their strife for a knockout spot. Pakistan are currently placed below the Kiwis in the fifth position of the World Cup table and it would take a miracle for them to secure a spot in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if the Asian giants can overcome all odds to secure a place in the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup.
