As India celebrated Raksha Bandhan on Monday, August 19, hundreds of hearts continued to reflect on a recent event that shook the nation to its core. The distressing incident of rape and murder in Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital has once again drawn attention to the question: Are our sisters really safe? Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav shared a thoughtful Raksha Bandhan post on Instagram on the sidelines of the horrific incident. In a strong voice message, the actor poured his heart out, urging people to protect and respect women.
“We live in a country where we worship Shakti but don’t respect women; we chant for Bharat Mata but misbehave with the women of our country,” he said, pointing out the stark contrast. The actor questioned if the brothers were actually protecting all the sisters around them.
“We live in a country where cities take to the streets to seek justice, but a murder case is framed as a suicide to avoid the repercussions,” Yadav added as he recalled the Kolkata rape-and-murder incident. “Humans have forgotten humanity, and anger and a devilish mentality are wreaking havoc. It is time people start learning respect, humanity, and non-violence once again. There is a need to study, rethink, and start fresh.” he concluded.
“Rakshabandhan pe sirf apne nahi, sabhi ki behenon ki sirf raksha nahi, unhe aadar aur samman bhi dete hai,” the actor wrote in the caption.
Earlier this month, a female doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the RG Kar hospital where she had been working. Several shocking details have been revealed about the case, sparking nationwide condemnation from citizens and celebrities. While public protests are taking place across the country, several Bollywood actors have expressed solidarity, demanding justice via social media posts.
Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Malaika Arora, Ayushmann Khurrana, Vijay Varma, Sonakshi Sinha, Sara Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra, among others, have reacted to the case.
