Maha Shivaratri stands as one of Hinduism’s most revered festivals, commemorating the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This year, it falls on March 8, with astrological beliefs guiding certain auspicious purchases to invite happiness and prosperity into households. Delhi-based astrologer Pandit Alok Pandya shared insights with News18 Hindi regarding items considered auspicious for acquisition on Maha Shivaratri.
The Idol of Nandi
Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva, holds a special place in his divine entourage. Bringing an idol of Nandi into the home on Maha Shivaratri is believed to garner divine favour, ward off difficulties and appease Lord Shiva.
Parad Shivling
The presence of a Parad Shivling in the household is believed to avert financial troubles, usher in happiness and dispel negative energies. Worshipping the Original Parad Shivling on this auspicious day is said to facilitate spiritual growth, absolve sins and fulfil desires.
Copper Pots
Acquiring and placing copper pots in the home on Maha Shivaratri is thought to attract good fortune. Utensils and plates made of copper are also recommended, especially for offerings made to the Shivling during worship.
According to Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma, specific food items and donations made on this day are considered propitious:
Ghee
Applying a paste made of ghee to the Shiva Lingam stone is believed to appease Lord Shiva.
Milk
Performing milk Abhishekam, or pouring milk over the Shiva Lingam, is believed to bring joy and prosperity.
Black Sesame Seeds
Offering black sesame seeds to Lord Shiva on Maha Shivaratri is believed to honour ancestors.
Donation of Clothes
Giving clothes to the less fortunate on Maha Shivaratri is believed to alleviate financial difficulties.
Observing these rituals and practices on Maha Shivaratri is believed to invoke divine blessings and ensure prosperity and well-being for devotees.
