Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is one of India’s grandest festivals, celebrating the arrival of Lord Ganesh in temples, pandals and homes. This vibrant festival, which marks the birth of Lord Ganesh, is observed with immense devotion and enthusiasm. It takes place during the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month, typically falling in August or September. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated from September 7 to September 17.
As the festival is just around the corner, preparations have already commenced to welcome Bappa. Many even bring Ganesh idols to their homes and worship during the 10 days. Before going into the details of performing Ganesh puja at home, it is important to know the shubh muhurat and tithi.

Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi At Home
1. Before Bappa’s arrival, one should properly clean the house and decorate it accordingly. On the morning of Ganesh Chaturthi, wake up early and take a bath.
2. Begin the rituals by bringing a clay idol, or Lord Ganesh, and installing it on the raised platform.
3. Once done, keep five flowers in front of the idol to offer a seat to the deity.
4. Next, wash his feet with water and offer scented water to the idol.
5. The idol is then offered a bath followed by another bath with panchamrit (a mix of curd, milk, honey, ghee, and sugar).
6. After the ritual, one can give a final bath with Gangajal and offer new clothes to Lord Ganesh.
7. In the next steps, make offerings of akshata (unbroken rice), pushpa mala (flower garland), sindoor (vermilion), durva (grass), shami patra, dhoop (incense), and deep (lamp).
8. Finally, one can begin the core sixteen-step puja rituals of Ganesh Chaturthi puja.
Devotees can also call a pandit to perform the rituals.
After completing the vidhi, offer prasad and other specialities like modak, laddoo, coconut, and fruits to everyone. Continue the puja every day in the morning and evening till visarjan.
On the final day, the idol is taken for immersion in a water body. Devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganesh, seeking blessings and wishing for his return next year.
