Is Hypersensitivity A Mental Disorder? Here’s What Expert Has To Say
If sensitivity starts influencing people's social and professional life, it can be regarded as a serious problem.

Every person is born with their own unique traits. They can be either thick skinned or could be highly sensitive. Their nature could depend on a number of factors like the upbringing, family environment as well as social environment. Certain behaviours, if leading to an extremity, may be considered mental disorders. So, is being highly sensitive a disorder or not? Experts share their opinion. Millions of people are highly sensitive, who get affected deeply by people and incidents. If this behaviour persists, it can start affecting others negatively. Dr Rajiv Mehta, a Senior Psychiatrist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, details more on the topic. According to him, being more sensitive is just a part of nature. If it starts influencing people’s social and professional life, it can be regarded as a serious problem. There are several reasons for hypersensitivity.

The expert states that if a person is under a lot of stress or repeatedly overthinks everything, their behaviour can become sensitive. He further added, if an individual has been brought up in an environment where lack of communication or negative conversation was a norm, it can lead to sensitivity.

As per more reports, the experts are of the belief that even highly qualified people are prone to hypersensitivity. Educated people tend to look at things with several perspectives. According to the expert, a person who is at a high post, carries the responsibility to deliver good results, which can make their behaviour sensitive.

Children who have received a lot of attention and love from their parents, can grow up to be sensitive adults. Such people are at a risk of encountering many problems in their personal as well as professional life. Highly sensitive people also become overthinkers, which just increases their difficulties. So, if a person is facing unavoidable problems in their life due to sensitivity, they can consult a health expert, advised Dr Rajiv.
