Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2017 brings to town a couture line up so exquisite that the fashion connoisseurs are left longing for more. Narendra Kumar, whose new collection titled 'The Millenials' made everyone groove to peppy beats Friday night, impressed one and all alike.
"It’s a millennials story – what life means to them, how they grow from a boy to a man, how sometimes some families had a career path already chosen for them. Today they can be anything and anyone – an organic farmer, could have one’s own page of – commerce, it’s about the confusion of them all", says the designer while talking to News18.com.
He highlights the confusion in the minds of millennials to figure out a career path for themselves. "Millennials are a different beast altogether. Our show is mostly about coming of age boys and we've tried to transform all that changes into fashion".
The designer points out that Bollywood actors have got no style of their own now. Most of what they wear and how they dress, according to him, is their stylists' or designer's point of view. "There are many actors who don’t have a style of their own - most of them in fact. It is a stylist/designer’s idea. It’s them who do that to build their image. They’re going through a change because the market is moving towards youth. Celebrities don’t know how to look young and youth yet be mature about it."
Even though he thinks most Bollywood actors have lost their own style statement, Narendra credits Ranveer Singh for his quirks. "I think Ranveer Singh has a style of his own. He’s in a way an icon for the youth."
When asked about why a lot of designers refrain from venturing into the menswear industry, the designer highlighted that menswear is not just about embroidery - but much more. "It is not just about embroidery - it's about technique, tailoring, fit, understanding a body to perfection and molding it according to the body type."
He explains how the menswear industry has gone through a cycle as women took over the fashion game."
He has no qualms in accepting that the "best of our talent is interested in surface embellishments more than understanding what’s beneath."
The designer, who has always made a strong point with his collections, believes that fashion can make social statements too. He feels men are now standing up for women's rights. "A lot of changes are happening in the society. In the US, women are standing up for themselves and for men to be seen as helping in women empowerment is a good thing – for them and the society. The awareness about a lot of issues including violence, girl child, rape and other societal issues are increasing."
"The younger men all around are standing up and now they want to hold their own," he adds.
