New York Fashion Week Brings Back Retro Hair Accessories

The Fall/Winter 2018 womenswear shows at New York Fashion Week have thrown up a surprising trend: old-school hair accessories. From banana clips to stretchy combs, retro accessories are being given a modern makeover.

Prabal Gurung's catwalk show brought back an accessory you might be forgiven for thinking you had left firmly in the 1990s: the stretchy comb. The flexible hair bands were sported by Bella Hadid et al, whose tresses were scraped back into messy chignons for a riff on middle-school style. Elsewear, Tom Ford gave the wide headband an edgy update by utilizing them in leather textures.

And if it wasn't headbands, it was clips and grips. Alexander Wang's banana clips were a big talking point, thanks to a style that saw the models double up on retro grips in metallic colors. Zadig & Voltaire got playful with bejeweled silver clips in striking lightning shapes, while Christian Siriano took a preppy approach, crafting old-school ponytails featuring a row of three barrette clips, for a studious result. Noon by Noor and Libertine used simple, singular grips to keep side-swept hair in place, while Veronica Beard grouped them together behind the ears. Whatever your accessory of choice, the message is clear: school day accents will have you top of the fashion class for Fall 2018.
