Restaurant Review: The Junkyard Cafe
Restaurant Review: The Junkyard Cafe
‘Thinking of discarding something? Stop right there!’ That’s the theme that runs through all recycled elements used to give ‘The Junkyard Café’ a distinct feel.

‘Thinking of discarding something? Stop right there!’ That’s the theme that runs through all recycled elements used to give ‘The Junkyard Café’ a distinct feel.

While ‘The Junkyard Café’ stands out from the multiple eating joints that are available at Connaught Place, it also help the guests understand that the interior design of any restaurant isn’t just about deciding the color for walls and the type of light fittings to be used.

With used furniture, cycle parts that many throw in a dumpster, the makers of ‘The Junkyrad Café’ found innovative ways to re-use the old trash -- all to explain recycling isn't tough provided you have clever ideas.

Décor: Locating its entrance is a bit of a task, but once you understand the way to reach it – you’ll be delighted with the panoramic view of CP that you get as you walk the long aisle to enter the restaurant. With oxidized wrenches, walls made of oilcans and metallic scrap used fixtures and a colossal World War I plane model placed strategically – it isn’t easy to stop talking about the décor and focus on the menu instead.

Food: The one think that we particularly liked about the drinks offered here was the presentation. Even before we could taste their drinks, we were completely impressed with the way they were designed and not with so much what went into it. But that doesn’t mean, it didn’t come with the right balance of texture, flavour, and nourishment. What’s also interesting about the cocktails is the fact that they are compartmentalized according to their serving mode (light bulbs, skulls made of glass, hats/sipper caps). And to ensure that the guests don’t face any inconvenience, they also offer a section with different size varieties - mug, barrel and tub. Since we found the Edison Bulb an interesting option on the menu, we decided to begin the culinary experience with it. A blend of vodka, watermelon, basil and lime juice, it scored high on its appearance, texture and flavour.

The Warm Chorizzo & Chickpeas salad that we tried right at the beginning tasted fresh. With 354 as its calorie content, the dish thankfully didn’t swim in dressing. Not too vegetable heavy, it was slightly spicy with a substantial amount of chickpeas for protein. From the starters we decided to pick Sausage Mushroom Caps and Curried Chicken Wontons. Since each mushroom is generously stuffed with the sausage and cheese mixture, it is slightly heavy. With so much of creativity shown in virtually every part of the restaurant, the chef could have decided to add more magic to Curried Chicken Wontons. We aren't complaining about the dish, just that it could have been a lot better.

For mains, we ordered the Lamb Seekh Kabab. Seasoned with mint and spiked with sesame sauce, it was a dish with soul. The next to be tried was Chicken Tikka Bruschetta that paled in comparison.

Service: 'The Junkyard Cafe' follows the rules of good serving.
