A tiny fruit from Asia is becoming a topic of discussion for its myriad benefits. Goji Berries (Lycium barbarum) are known to be in use quite widely in traditional Chinese medicines. The berries are loaded with nutrients that help aid various ailments pertaining to the organs of the body.
One such organ that the goji berries have a positive effect on is the liver. Dr Lily Choi, a practitioner of natural healing, recently shared a post on Instagram elaborating on the benefits of Goji Berries on the liver.
Dr Choi writes, “Liver disease is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world,” and mentions that several of them remain “incurable.” Pressing the need to develop a highly effective pharmacological drug, Dr Choi goes on to highlight multiple properties – hepatoprotective, antifibrotic, and anti-inflammatory, among others – that benefit the liver.
Dr Choi recommends the use of goji berries to “anyone suffering from liver imbalances.” Goji berries have zeaxanthin dipalmitate, a type of antioxidant that is quite effective in fighting liver diseases. The fruit can be used to cure alcohol-induced fatty liver diseases. Dr Choi cites a study that claimed that these berries can also help in inhibiting the growth of tumours triggered by liver cancer cells.
Not only the liver but goji berries are also believed to be very beneficial for the eyes. The fruit contains an amino acid called Taurine which is the “building block of human protein found in the brain, spinal cord, heart, muscle cells, skeletal muscles tissues, and retina,” according to Dr Choi.
Taurine also works in strengthening the immune system since it is already present in a certain amount in the white blood cells. This amino acid protects the retina due to its immune-modulating, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties. Goji berries can be consumed in a plethora of ways, including oatmeal, salad, and smoothies.
