Pill Ep 1 and 2 Review: Riteish Deshmukh's Show Is Thought-Provoking But Takes Time To Cook
Riteish Deshmukh and Pawan Malhotra shine in Pill, which delves into the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry.

Pill is now streaming on JioCinema. The show is directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and stars Riteish Deshmukh, Pawan Malhotra, Neha Saraf, Akshat Chauhan and Anshul Chauhan in key roles. But is the show worth watching? Read on to know more:

What Does Pill Revolve Around?

It is a medical drama that delves deep into the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry. It shows certain pharma companies bribing doctors to falsely obtain their drug testing reports even if they are dangerous to human health. It begins with the story of a young boy – a journalist – who finds a file of a pharma company – which shows that one of its medicines was rejected because of its side effects. However, the drug is still available in the market and is being prescribed to patients. When he tries to find out the truth behind that file, he faces goons of the pharma company and discovers their dark truths.

Performances In Pill

Riteish Deshmukh takes away the limelight in the show’s first two episodes. He plays the role of Dr Prakash Chauhan and tries to bring something new to his audience. His character is both cowardly and fearless. The actor delivers a powerful performance.

On the other hand, Pavan Malhotra is brilliant as always. He dons the villain’s hat in this show and manages to impress with his unpredictable character.

Neha Saraf gets little screen time in the first two episodes but portrays the role of a strong independent woman, which manages to stand out. Akshat Chauhan is fun to watch as well. His dialogue delivery adds a layer of humour to this otherwise dark show.

What Works?

News reports have shed light on the unethical practices in the pharmaceutical world. Pill takes on the elements from these and weaves an interesting fictional tale that keeps you hooked from the word go. The series is thought-provoking and makes you question numerous things, including how human life is being compromised for money. The script is well-researched and the makers have highlighted the struggles of patients and whistleblowers, which stands out in the storytelling.

What Does Not Work?

The show is slow and predictable. Right from the first episode, it will remind you of Shefali Shah and Kirti Kulhari’s 2022 web series, Human – which was also not well made series but its timing was apt i.e. just after the coronavirus pandemic. Pill feels a little lost because it fails to bring anything new to the audience. It does not excite us with any twists.

In Pill, a rival pharmacy company is shown taking over Malhotra’s power in the medical world and eating its stocks. However, that sub-plot is presented in haste.

Overall, Pill is undoubtedly thought-provoking but is a slow watch.
