There have been many actors in Hindi cinema who couldn’t achieve stardom as a lead actor but garnered massive fame as a supporting actor or a villain. One of them is the late actor and producer Sujit Kumar who displayed his acting mettle with the antagonist and supporting roles. Born on February 7, 1934, in Benares state, British India, Sujit Kumar faced many setbacks in the initial stages of his career but remained undeterred and soon bagged the opportunity to act alongside many revered actors like Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman, and others. His prominent performances were alongside the superstar of the Hindi cinema, Rajesh Khanna. This space articulates the story of the Barood actor who is regarded as the first superstar of Bhojpuri films.

As per the reports, the late actor used to practice law before embarking on his career in the cinema and was also fond of playing cricket. Soon, however, his passion for acting transcended his fondness for cricket and he decided to take up acting as a full-time work. This happened due to an incident in Sujit Kumar’s life while he was completing his studies at a college in London. While studying in college he reportedly participated in a play that drew him accolades from the judging panel of this drama. Amongst the panel, the famous producer-director Phani Majumdar greatly appreciated his acting and advised him to become an actor. It was this appreciation that pushed forward Sujit Kumar to make a name for himself in the acting field.

In the initial stages of his career, the Barood actor got to enact uncredited roles in films like China Town (police inspector), Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (Sub Inspector), Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Men (Dr D’ Silva), etc. According to the reports, he got to act in Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Men because of its writer and filmmaker Kishore Kumar. Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Men received praise from the audiences and the critics. In Hindi films, Sujit Kumar acted in more than 12 films alongside Rajesh Khanna, i.e.- Aradhana (1969), Ittefaq (1969), and others. One of the evergreen tracks for which Rajesh Khanna and Sujit Kumar shared screens is Mere Sapno Ki Rani.

This song is from the film Aradhana. Sujit Kumar died on February 5, 2010, at 75.
