Last year, the Telugu film Baby made heads turn and proved that even small films can do phenomenal business if the content is good. Baby starred Anand Deverakonda, Vaishnavi Chaitanya and Viraj Ashwin in lead roles and was directed by Sai Rajesh Neelam. Made on a shoestring budget of just Rs 10 crore, the film went on to collect Rs 100 crore at the box office, becoming a smash hit. It was also very positively reviewed by critics and audiences loved the freshness of the coming of age story.
After winning much praise last year, the makers of Baby have now added yet another feather to their cap by winning big at the 69th Filmfare Awards South. The film, which has attained cult status won in 5 different categories at the Award ceremony held recently.
Vaishnavi Chaitanya won the Best Actress award for her outstanding performance. The film was named Best Film, acknowledging its commercial success and its status as a Rs 100-crore grosser. Vijay Bulganin was honoured as Best Music Composer for his work on the film’s soundtrack, which includes the popular song Oo Rendu Meghalila. Ananth Sriram received the Best Lyricist award for his captivating lyrics, and Sriram Chandra was awarded Best Singer for his rendition of the same song.
The success and popularity of the film Baby can be judged by the fact that a Hindi remake of the same is already on the cards. According to reports, Sai Rajesh, director of the original, has finished penning the script for the Hindi remake. It is not known whether he will return to the director’s seat for the remake or whether a Bollywood-based director will be chosen. The latest update is that producer Madhu Mantena will co-produce the film along with SKN and Geetha Arts. The actors for the Hindi remake have not been finalised as of yet.
