Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta allegedly faced harassment when she recently decided to be a part of a rally demanding justice for the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The actress even faced ‘go back’ slogans.
While Sengupta was forced to leave the protest venue, she has now opened up about the shocking incident. In a recent interview with AajTak Bangla, the actress said, “The way they were pushing me, I could have died.”
“They used crass language. Young boys and girls started hitting my car. No one knew who they were. They are unnamed. They possibly enter all protests in the same way. Such elements are giving a wrong direction to the protest and defocusing the masses,” she added.
“If this is the situation outside amidst so many people, then one can only wonder how unsafe and insecure the girl (Abhaya) was on that day,” continued and questioned the resistance against her.
Rituparna, who joined the protest on September 3, was largely absent during the initial days of the protests. While she showed her solidarity on social media by blowing conch shells, her act was not appreciated by netizens.
Sharing why she was absent from the protests so far, the actress clarified, “I could not be present on August 14 for ‘reclaim the night’ so I wanted to express solidarity. I am artist, our expressions are different, so blowing conch was my way of standing with the mass. That was misinterpreted.”
The brutal rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata has left the entire nation shocked. So far, several celebrities including Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor Khan among others have reacted to the incident, demanding strict punishment for the accused.
Recently, veteran actress Shabana Azmi also called the RG Kar Hospital incident ‘extremely dangerous’ and mentioned it is sad to see not a lot is changed since the 2012 Nirbhaya rape and murder case.
