Channing Tatum, known for his performances in films like Magic Mike, was poised to enter the Marvel universe with his portrayal of Gambit in a standalone feature under Fox’s X-Men label, according to Fandomwire. The project has been in the works since 2014. However, following the merger of 20th Century Fox and Disney in 2019, the Gambit project was put on hold, leaving Tatum disheartened. Now, after years of anticipation, fans may finally witness Gambit’s debut in the upcoming Deadpool 3.
This speculation gained traction after Hugh Jackman, known for his role as Wolverine, responded to Tatum’s recent Instagram post. Tatum had commented, “Letttsss gooo daddy!!!!” on Jackman’s post, which many interpreted as a hint at Tatum’s appearance as Gambit in Deadpool 3.

At present, fans are eagerly waiting for Deadpool 3, which is expected to feature several returning Marvel characters. If the rumours are true, Tatum’s Gambit will join the MCU alongside Deadpool and Wolverine.
Tatum’s passion for the Gambit project was evident, as he was not only set to star but also wanted to direct the film. However, the studio was hesitant to let him helm the project due to his lack of directorial experience. According to Fandonwire, despite his willingness to step back from directing, the project was cancelled after the Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum disheartened.
Talking about the project to Variety, Tatum said, “The studio really didn’t want us to direct it. They wanted anybody but us, essentially, because we had never directed anything… Once Gambit went away, I was so traumatized. I shut off my Marvel machine. I haven’t been able to see any of the movies. I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.”
If Tatum does appear as Gambit in Deadpool 3, it could be a redemption of sorts for the actor, who felt disconnected from Marvel projects after the cancellation of the Gambit film. Fans are hopeful that Marvel will greenlight Tatum’s passion project in the future.
The third part of the Deadpool franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine, is tentatively set to be released on July 26, 2024.
