On the occasion of the 78th Independence Day of India, South star Vikram gifted his fans with his highly anticipated film, Thangalaan. It was directed by Pa Ranjith and produced by KE Gnanavel Raja. Apart from Vikram, the film starred Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone in prominent roles. As per the media reports, it was reportedly made with a budget of Rs 100 crore. On its opening Thursday, the film Thangalaan grossed Rs 12.6 crore at the box office. The movie was released in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the earnings were Rs 11 crore in Tamil, Rs 1.5 crore in Telugu and Rs 10 lakh in Malayalam. On its first Sunday, it collected Rs 6.5 crore, taking the worldwide collection to Rs 43.70 crore. Now, as the film earnings are gaining pace, reports are circulating regarding the remuneration of the actor and director for the film.
As per the report of Times of India, the director Pa Ranjith’s remuneration fee for Thangalaan was Rs 10 crore. This hefty sum indicates the high budget of the film. Sampath Ram, who grabbed the attention of the fans with his role as Kaadaiyan’s aide, has received Rs 20 lakh for periodic drama. GV Prakash Kumar, the music composer, received Rs 3 crore. The film is produced under the banner of Studio Green.
Reviews have mostly been positive with fans favourably comparing the film with the KGF films. The reason is that akin to the Kannada film franchise, which revolved around gold hunting in the Kolar Gold Fields, Thangalaan has a similar theme. Dhananjayan, the CEO of Studio Green – the producers – said that while the KGF films were fictional, certain elements from Thangalaan are based on real-life incidents.
The story of this film takes place in 1850 during the British era. Thangalaan, played by Vikram and his villagers suffer at the hands of their village landlord. Landlords confiscate his land records for failure to pay taxes. To pay off his debts, Thangalaan agrees to guide the British into the Kolar Gold Fields to hunt for gold. However, they face resistance from a powerful sorceress cum local deity played by Malavika Mohanan.
