Director Wes Ball Recalls Watching First Ever Planet of the Apes Movie: 'I Just Loved...'
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has finally released on OTT in India.

Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global epic franchise of Planet of the Apes with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, set several generations after Caesar’s reign. In this era, apes are the dominant species living harmoniously, while humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape embarks on a harrowing journey, questioning all he has known about the past and making choices that will define the future for both apes and humans alike. With the film recently released on Disney+ Hotstar, the filmmaker opened up about watching the first ever Planet of the Apes film.

For the unversed, The first ever Planet of the Apes film was released in 1968. The film starred Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly, and Linda Harrison. Director Wes Ball said he loved the franchise ever since he was a child. He said, “I’ve been watching these movies forever. When I was a kid I watched the original ’68 Planet of the Apes a lot. Which is kind of odd, for a kid to watch an old movie like that. And obviously, the last three movies were great. Big shoes to fill!”

He added, “The social commentary probably went over my head as a kid, so it was the world creation that I loved. I just loved going to that world. Obviously I know now that the power of those movies is that they’re very much telling a human story, but using these apes to analyze humanity. We’ve tried to hold onto that for this movie. We’re creating a sense of culture and place and reality, while still trying to talk about what it means to be human.”

The new Planet of the Apes film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes released on Disney+ Hotstar on August 2.
