KS Ravikumar assisted various directors such as Bharathiraja, Vikraman, E Ramdoss, Nagesh, Ramarajan and K. Rangaraj. Ravikumar worked as a co-director in RB Choudary’s production Pudhu Vasantham directed by Vikraman and the success of the film prompted the producer to give Ravikumar a chance to make his directorial debut. Thus, Ravikumar debuted as a filmmaker with Puriyaadha Pudhir (1990), a crime film starring Rahman and Raghuvaran in the lead roles. The film, a remake of the Kannada film Tarka, received positive reviews upon its release and remains Ravikumar’s only film outside the masala film genre.

The success of the film enabled KS Ravikumar to expand his team of assistants and soon after, he started working on a film for the same production house titled Pudhu Kaaviyam starring Vikram, but it was later shelved. He subsequently changed film genres and made a series of village action films. He regularly worked with actor Sarath Kumar and had success with Cheran Pandiyan (1991) and Nattamai (1994), after which he became a sought-after filmmaker in the Tamil film industry.
