Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard, of Succession fame, and Harry Melling of The Queen’s Gambit, will be playing lovers in an upcoming romance drama, Pillion. The film, described as a “fun and filthy romance with heart”, will be directed by BAFTA-nominated director Harry Lighton. Pillion is based on Box Hill, a 2019 novel by Adam Mars-Jones. Box Hill is the winner of the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize winner.
The film is being produced by Irish film company Element Pictures, best known for making multiple Oscar-winning indie films like Poor Things and The Zone of Interest. Cornerstone Films will be handling Pillion’s worldwide sales and pitch it to buyers at the Cannes film market scheduled for next week.
As per Variety Magazine, Pillion follows the life of Colin (played by Harry Melling), an anti-social introvert who leads a boring life. One day he meets Ray (played by Alexander Skarsgård), the charming leader of a motorbike club. Collin agrees to be Ray’s “submissive” and gets involved in Ray’s exciting but dangerous lifestyle, which is far removed from his dull suburban life. However, the more Collin gets into Ray’s world, the more he begins to doubt his role as Ray’s submissive.
According to Variety, Element Pictures’ Emma Norton, Andrew Lowe, and Ed Guiney will produce Pillion alongside Lee Groombridge. Additionally, Claire Binns for Picturehouse, BBC Film’s Eva Yates, September Films’ Pim Hermeling and Skarsgård will be the executive producers.
The behind-the-scenes cast of Pillion is supported by those who are the best in the business. The head of cinematography is Nick Morris, whereas the production designer is Francesca Massariol. BIFA Award-winning costume designer Grace Snell is in charge of the costumes department. Oliver Coates, who made music for Aftersun, is in charge of music. The casting for the film is done by seasoned casting director Kahleen Crawford.
Element Pictures’ Emma Norton said about the film, “Everyone at Element is so excited to help Harry Lighton bring ‘Pillion’ to life. Harry is a filmmaker who is drawn to risk and fascinated by the potential to find surprising complexity in everyday life. We love this about him and believe that ‘Pillion’ is the perfect expression of his talent, bravery and ambition.”
Cornerstone’s Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder said, “Harry’s script is equally compelling and shocking as it is funny and entertaining – and one of the best we’ve read in years. The casting is inspired and we are thrilled to unleash this brilliant project in the Cannes market.”
