Sony Pictures has resealed the initial trailer for an upcoming supernatural horror film, Tarot, promising spine-chilling thrills for fans of the genre. Originally named Horrorscope, this movie is scheduled to make its exclusive debut in theaters on May 10, immersing audiences in an eerie narrative. Featuring a cast including Harriet Slater, Avantika, and Jacob Batalon, the storyline revolves around a group of college friends entangled in a life-or-death struggle after violating the sacred rules of Tarot readings. Despite the familiarity of the premise, akin to other films like Ouija, the creative and frightening visuals showcased in the trailer hint at a potentially enjoyable horror experience for summer moviegoers.
The trailer employs conventional horror elements such as jump scares and a typical horror film score. The official synopsis for the film was also revealed alongside the trailer. It reads, “When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings – never use someone else’s deck – they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings."
The trailer starts with a group of teenagers immersed in Tarot reading, accompanied by mysterious voices saying, “Welcome to the circle. One more at the heart. With this final card, your meeting will start." As the teens delve into the practice, a gust of wind suggests an arrival, leaving Jacob Batalon’s character visibly perplexed.
Progressing through the trailer, Avantika and Harriet Slater’s characters are depicted observing the Tarot reading. Elise, portrayed by Slater, faces inquiries about the origins of the cards. The subsequent scene reveals Elise entering a room adorned with a forbidding “Keep out" sign.
Amidst discussion, one of Elise’s friends outlines an unspoken rule in Tarot readings – refraining from using someone else’s cards. However, Elise dismisses the concern with a nonchalant “Who cares?" before the group initiates their readings. The trailer further introduces voices cautioning, “Follow one rule to stay out of danger." The teenagers’ breach of this rule triggers the emergence of entities from the cards, each relentlessly hunting down a character.
Notably, one entity takes the form of a jester. Subsequent scenes depict the characters in a car, confronted by an unidentified individual urging them to “run."
