Hrithik Roshan Spent 3 Hours 45 Feet Underwater During Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai Shoot: 'I Almost Drowned'
In an old BBC interview, Hrithik shared that he "almost drowned" while filming this underwater sequence.

Hrithik Roshan debuted in Bollywood with Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai in 2000, directed by his father Rakesh Roshan. He played dual roles as Rohit and Raj, with Rohit’s underwater death being a memorable scene. In an old BBC interview, Hrithik shared that he “almost drowned” while filming this underwater sequence. When asked by host Karan Thapar if he performed the scene himself, Hrithik confirmed that he did, spending three hours 45 feet underwater.

“That was me, it was me yeah, 45 feet (underwater) I think, if I can get, yeah 45 feet underwater and sitting for three hours,” Hrithik said, adding, “I almost drowned. It was fun because it looked great. So, everything that you know works out for film is worth it.”

For those who may not know, Hrithik Roshan’s character Rohit in Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai dies after falling into a river due to a bike accident because he can’t swim. Hrithik’s dedication is commendable, as he performed the underwater scene safely. In this film, Hrithik Roshan was paired with Ameesha Patel, who also made her debut. The cast included Anupam Kher, Ashish Vidyarthi, Dalip Tahil, Mohnish Bahl, Farida Jalal, and Satish Shah. Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai was released on January 21, 2000.

Meanwhile, Ameesha Patel hosted an Ask Me Anything session on X (formerly known as Twitter). During the session, she was asked, “When can we expect a film with you and Hrithik?” Ameesha Patel promptly responded, “Well, all I can say is with confidence. When the ticket counters are mentally prepared for 60 crore plus opening… Tab I guess. That’s Kaho Na Pyaar Hai 2 for you on screen that very day.”

The success of Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai went beyond box office numbers. In 2002, it set a Guinness World Record for winning the most awards for a feature film, with 92 awards across various categories. The movie’s engaging storyline and memorable music left a lasting impact on audiences, and the on-screen pairing of Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel was beloved by fans.
