I tell my children not to kill themselves and their talent by over working: Shakti Kapoor
On this Father’s day, we asked Shakti Kapoor about the type of rapport he shares with his children actress Shraddha Kapoor and director Siddhant Kapoor.

New Delhi: Shakti Kapoor, whose former name was Sunil Sikanderlal Kapoor changed his name before joining the Industry because he felt that the name 'Sunil Kapoor' was too weak for a villain. He has played different roles in different languages, be it negative villainous acts or comic and humorous jobs. Shakti Kapoor, who in the beginning of his career did many small inconsequential roles in movies, all the while looking out for a suitable role as a leading man, is today a man with more than 300 movies in his kitty. On this Father’s day, we asked him about the type of rapport he shares with his children actress Shraddha Kapoor and diector Siddhant Kapoor.

Does Shraddha discuss her projects with you?

She discusses everything with the family and then takes her final decision. She talks about everything she plans for with the family. It’s not just her, but everyone in the family, be it my wife Shivangi, son Sidhant or me, we discuss and then decide. Our family is one and we don’t have any hassles or ego problems at home and thus discussing is not an issue.

As a father, do you ever feel insecure for your daughter?

Shraddha is a Boston university student and she is very independent. Both my children have a different mindset. They are very much mature to decide what to do and what not to. So, no, I am not at all insecure about her, but rather proud of her achievements.

Stardom also has a negative impact, how do you shield your daughter from that?

She knows she has got her father, who has been in the industry for around 40 years doing approximately 300 films in all the languages of the country, and he will always be there by her side. My father-in-law is a music teacher, my wife’s first cousin are Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, all that brought a difference in the upbringing. So she knows how to handle herself and even if she goes wrong, we as a family will be there for her.

What advice do you give to your daughter and son to ensure they do well in life?

Your sorrows, your tears, your smiles have to have energy. Even the energy level of getting low in life should have energy, that now I am tired and I am getting out of it for a while now. Enjoy every phase of your life.

How should father-son, father-daughter relationship be like?

I think one should give them freedom, some space to breath and I’ll always be there for them if they go wrong, but at the end of the day they are grownups and as a father I let them be themselves. Our father-daughter or father-son relationship is open enough that we share and express whenever one goes wrong, no matter if that’s me.

Your son, Sidhant is an actor/director, and Shraddha a known face in Bollywood. When can we expect to see all the faces of your family together in a movie?

Mr. Tutu sharma is a producer, and Mr. Pankaj Saraswat is a director, then Shraddha Kapoor, Sidhant Kapoor, Padmani Kolhapure, Tejaswani Kolhapure, and Shakti Kapoor are actors, there is Priyank Sharma. Padmini Kolhapure’s son, who will soon join the industry. So yeah,, though there are no such plans, let’s hope to see this whole family together soon.

How important do you think it is for a father to keep the balance, to keep a protective eye and still to set them free?

If I talk about myself, I’ve a third eye that follows my children. I, without letting them even feel that, keep an eye over things like every other father, and they keep me informed about details too. I practically know almost everyone in the industry through which I make sure that they are guarded. They respect this and they do listen to all my advice, I am thankful to them for this. And plus, my wife is there to act as a shield to them.

You’ve done a lot of movies with versatile roles, what are your expectations from your daughter?

My time was a different age of cinema, today it’s completely different. There are not just movies to be done, brand endorsements, shows, events, so I tell them not to kill themselves and their talent by over working. They should work and enjoy their lives as well.

What's your reaction?
