Junaid Khan’s debut film Maharaj generated attention for the controversy surrounding its release. Despite the delay in its streaming debut, the film was well-received by audiences. The actor maintains that the makers never intended to offend anyone’s feelings.
He told Hindustan Times, “I certainly did not feel that way when I had heard the script and through my conversations with Sidharth (Malhotra; director) sir and (producer) Aditya Chopra sir. The film celebrates a community that stood up for what was right over a hundred and seventy years ago when these sort of things (gender inequality, exploitation of women, religious superstitions) were rampant everywhere. I think as more and more people are watching the film, they are seeing it for what was intended.”
The release of Maharaj faced an initial setback when the Gujarat High Court intervened due to concerns raised by members of the Vaishnavite Pustimargi sect over its portrayal of their religious beliefs. However, the High Court later lifted the stay, permitting the film’s release on Netflix on June 21. The Court concluded that the film was not specifically intended to target the sect, contrary to the allegations.
Reflecting on the nerve-wracking period of uncertainty surrounding the film’s release, the 31-year-old son of actor Aamir Khan expressed, “We were all a bit on edge when the film was stalled. As a team, we drew hope from the positive reactions at the media and industry screenings held the day before the intended release. I’m thankful to the judiciary for seeing the film for what it is and allowing its release.”
Junaid expressed his desire for those who initially felt apprehensive about the film potentially offending their religious beliefs without even watching it, “The positive word of mouth and reviews are doing that already [sending a message]. I hope that everyone sees the film and the intention behind the film for what it is,” he stated.
Maharaj was released on June 14, 2024, creating an uproar across the nation and beyond. The audience is liking the film. Maharaj, directed by Siddharth P Malhotra is making waves on OTT and is trending at number one in India. It has also been successful in securing its place in the top-10 in other 22 countries.
In this film, Junaid has played the role of the 19th century social reformer named Karsandas Mulji. Jaideep Ahlawat played the role of Jadunath Maharaj, Shalini Pandey played Kishori, whereas Sharvari Wagh played Viraj.
The film has inspired the audience with its storyline and social message. It reflects that the places of worship and religion are good for people, instead of worshipping people who claim themselves God, we should focus directly on the divine. It also suggests that we should not blindly follow traditions.
