Kartik Aaryan starrer Chandu Champion had an unexpectedly low opening at the box office but soon picked up pace on the second day itself. Released on June 14, the movie has grossed Rs 29.75 crore at the box office in 5 days and is still far away from its break-even point of a Rs 140 crore budget. According to Sacnilk.com, the biopic sports drama collected Rs 3.25 crore on its fifth day of release, which also marks its first Tuesday.
The movie, directed by Kabir Khan, has received mixed to positive reviews with particular praise for Kartik Aaryan’s performance and his dramatic physical transformation.
The sports drama film has now found a dedicated patron in one of the most legendary figures in Indian sports, former cricketer Kapil Dev. Kapil Dev, who brought laurels to India by captaining the World Cup-winning team in 1983, recently watched Chandu Champion and has been left highly impressed by it. He expressed his appreciation of the film on social media and remarked how it made him laugh, cry and feel proud as an Indian. He also called it more than just a sports film and appreciated the team behind the film calling them all champions.
Kapil Dev wrote on Instagram, “Chandu champion! Definitely a film you cannot miss. I really enjoy watching and appreciate sports films. But this goes beyond being just a sports film. It is so much more. While watching it I laughed, cried, felt pride and cried some more. Hats off to @kabirkhankk. You have done it again. Made yet another spectacular film. What an incredible performance by @kartikaaryan, your effort and talent are shining. Congratulations to the whole cast and crew and thank you for giving us this film to watch. You are all champions!.”
This endorsement from Kapil Dev, a figure synonymous with excellence and resilience, significantly enhances Chandu Champion’s credibility. His appreciation highlights the film’s capacity to evoke a range of emotions and is expected to help the film earn more at the box office as a way of positive word of mouth.
Chandu Champion has Kartik Aaryan star as India’s first Paralympics gold medallist Murlikant Petkar. The film is Aaryan’s second collaboration with producer Sajid Nadiadwala after last year’s Satyaprem ki Katha. The actor underwent a significant physical change for the role, reducing his body fat percentage from 39 per cent to a slender 7 per cent over only 14 months.
