Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal is gearing up for season 3 with a projected release in 2025 on Adult Swim. This prehistoric animated series follows Spear, a Neanderthal and his fierce Tyrannosaurus companion, Fang, as they navigate a brutal world filled with carnivorous dinosaurs and other dangers, including advanced groups of early humans like Ancient Egyptians and Viking-like tribes.
In a recent interview with Collider, Genndy Tartakovsky revealed the progress of the new season, stating that the animation is already halfway complete. He is also in the process of finalising the script for the tenth episode during the interview.
“It’s coming. I’m finishing up the tenth episode right now, and so we got 10 more half-hours. We’re in production, and it’s gonna blow everybody’s socks off, I think,” Tartakovsky said on the status of Primal season 3.
“I’m just finishing up the last episode, and already half of it is already done because it’s all overlapped. Half of it is already animated. We’re doing post on the first two episodes already, so we’re over the hard part. We’re in the heat of production,” he added.
However, the director did not disclose specific details about the upcoming season and stated, “It’s something special. That’s all.”
In a previous conversation with ComicBook last year, Tartakovsky mentioned that he has a “spectacular” idea for the series that he is eager to bring to life. He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I have something in mind that is so spectacular I cannot wait to do it, and we’re trying to figure out how to do it.” Tartakovsky indicated that this concept introduces a brand-new world within the Primal universe and feels like a natural progression for the story. He shared that he has more ideas for the Primal world and is excited to explore them further.
The final episode of season 2 featured an intense showdown with Spear and Fang. After escaping from slavery, Spear, Fang, their two hatchlings, and their new human friend, Mira, arrive in her lively homeland, hoping for peace.
Their peace is short-lived when a Viking chieftain, a supernatural enemy from their past, attacks. In a desperate effort to protect his loved ones, Spear throws himself at the blazing Viking, defeating him but suffering serious burns in the process, leading to a tragic end to his story.
As time passes, Mira gives birth to their child, who begins to follow in her father’s footsteps by riding alongside Fang and her now-grown T-Rex children.
