The mass hysteria and high-pitched screaming that characterised megastar Rajinikanth's fan following spread nationwide as the hype and insane frenziness marked the release of his latest film 2.0 in about 10,000 screens across India and abroad. The long-awaited sequel to the 2010 blockbuster Robot by director S Shankar has released to a rousing reception with trade analysts predicting its day one collection at Rs 100 crore worldwide.

The film, which is touted as the most expensive Indian project ever, marks Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar's Tamil debut and sees him in the role of an antagonist, Dr Richard/Crowman, a cellphone-hating mutant scientist. While Rajini reprises his role as Dr Vaseegaran/Chitti from the original film.

The film also features Adil Hussain, Sudhanshu Pandey and Amy Jackson in key roles. Music maestro AR Rahman has scored the film.
If the initial reviews are anything to go by, it seems the fans of Thalaiva are super impressed with Shankar's directorial, with many hailing it as one of the best films Indian cinema ever produced. Calling Shankar a "genius", a social media user wrote, "Shankar sir is visionary of epic proportion."

Another user tweeted, "The VFX & action in #2Point0 is of another level. It will BLOW YOUR MIND. First half was dull, Second half was engaging. #Rajinikanth evoked nostalgia, #AkshayKumar is terrific." (sic)

Interval. The visuals are indeed stunning, you can actually see a lot of hard work that has gone behind the visual effects though the story hardly moves anywhere so far. Akshay Kumar makes his appearance at the stroke of intermission. #2point0— R! (@WeirdlyProbable) November 29, 2018

2.0 has, however, been a long time coming. The film, which was originally set to arrive in cinemas last year on Diwali, was later pushed to a December 2017 debut. It was once again moved a month further to January 2018, in order to allow more time for post-production. After too much rescheduling, the Rajinikanth-Akshay starrer finally releases today.
At Rs 543 crore, this Rajinikanth film is more expensive than several successful Hollywood VFX classics like Deadpool (USD 58 million), X-Men (USD 75 million) and Batman (USD 35 million).
