Salman Khan and Bhagyashree’s cult film Maine Pyaar Kiya was released in 1989. It was the highest-grossing film of the 1980s after Sholay. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the romantic movie is still remembered for its unforgettable songs, dialogues and stunning chemistry between the two. The film also performed well in Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions. The film also featured Rajeev Verma, Reema Lagoo, Alok Nath, Mohnish Bahl and Ajit Vachani.
Rajeev Verma is remembered for his role as Salman Khan’s father in Maine Pyaar Kiya. Verma’s character left a deep impression on the audience. Besides this, the actor shares a lovely bond with Khan, with whom he also shared screen space in the emotional film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and the intense Nishchaiy. “I worked with Salman in many films after that. Zikr nahi karte lekin wo bachcha abhi bhi waise hi hai. (It is not like we talk about our past work when we meet, but Salman is still the same kid)” while talking about Salman Khan, in a conversation with Vistaar News.
Rajeev Verma, who is mostly seen in the role of a father in films and television shows, was asked if he met Khan and discussed their previous works. To this, the actor talked about Salman Khan’s good qualities and brought up Madhya Pradesh (MP) as a reference since both of them hail from the same state. He said, “Ye cheez usme hai aur khas taur se humare Madhya Pradesh ke logo me hai. Wo apne buzurgo aur seniors ka abhi bhi us tarah se izzat karte hain. Aur wo abhi bhi kabhi kabhi mulaqat ho jaati hai. (This quality is in him, especially among people from Madhya Pradesh. They still respect their elders and seniors in the same way. I still get to meet Salman occasionally).” For context, while Salman Khan’s birthplace is in Indore, Rajeev is from Narmadapuram, MP.
In the same conversation, the actor was questioned whether he knew he would go a long way while working on Maine Pyaar Kiya and making his big screen debut. Claiming that he wasn’t that far-sighted, he said, “I didn’t think about it that way. I just wanted to work. They had seen Chunauti and called me for the film. They felt I was a different kind of a father and then they tested me for Maine Pyaar Kiya. Half of my hair was white then, but they said this can’t be it, we want only some portions white! That’s how I bagged the film.”
Apart from Maine Pyaar Kiya, Rajeev Verma also appeared in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Deedar, Yeh Raste Hain Pyar Ke, Kacche Dhaage, Biwi No. 1, Himmatwala and Andaaz, among others. He was also seen in a number of side roles in many superhit films. Verma made his entry into television with the 1987 show Chunauti on Doordarshan. Following this, he also played various roles in television shows and theatres.
