A game that gripped the entire gaming world in 2009 is back and this time on the big screen with live-animation! Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly remake the famous smart-phone game into an animated film which shows how the happy, flightless birds turned into angry birds.
The film revolves around loner Red (the face of the game) who is an outcast in a happy bird island. The fiery bird has anger issues and is sent to anger management class where he meets trainer Matilda, and fellow classmates Chuck, Bomb and Terence (Big Brother). Everything is awful in Red's life and arrival of mysterious green piggies make it all the more awful. Red suspects their action and includes Chuck and Bomb in his plan to go and look for Mighty Eagle for his advice. The wise, highly respected bird is a myth for many and is the only bird who can fly. From there starts a hilarious adventure filled with true 'Angry Birds' action.
The film has everything the game had and a back story. Red is always angry, Chuck is fast, Bomb blows up when angry Matilda releases bombs and Terence, well he's HUGE! Green pigs are as annoying as they are in the game and have a swag of their own. The makers have kept elements from the contemporary pop-culture from 'Daft-Punk' to 'X-Men', that you can enjoy.
'The Angry Birds Movie' has everything that a summer holiday movie needs. Enough adventure for kids, innocent big eyed cuddly creatures, lot of humour and a moral to end it all. The story is predictable but the humour and action keeps it from getting boring.
Voiceover of Josh Gad as Chuck, Sean Penn as Terence and Peter Dinklage as Mighty Eagle just take the cake with hilarious delivery and amazing characterization. The film's plot is childish (keeping in mind its target audience) and tries to cash in on the game's addictive popularity. For the rest, the film is like any regular animated film, full of cute characters and bland story.
So should we pass the movie calling it a kid's film and designed for Gen-Z? Well, considering that Hollywood animation world has touched skies in terms of plot, with films like 'Inside Out', 'Good Dinosaur' and this year's 'Zootopia', this one looks like a weak link.
The film is overloaded with cuteness, Chuck's 'Quicksilver' tactics, and rightly put essence of the game. It is a good summer watch for Gen Z who opened their eyes with their fingers on the string throwing the birds inside green piggie's castle. An interesting storyline would have made it a perfect watch for all, but again not all films are meant to be legends., This one thrives on its commercial perfection and for reviving a popular game in people's minds.
As Red puts it, "We are birds, we descended from dinosaurs, we are not supposed to be nice!"
