This Was Literally Tyla's Show-Stopping Met Gala Moment; Missed It?
For her Met Gala debut, South African pop star Tyla arrived in Balmain's “sand” floor-grazing gown.

Over the years, the Met Gala has witnessed daring and unconventional appearances quite literally. Continuing this trend, this year’s fashion extravaganza saw South African pop star Tyla taking over the red carpet. For her Met Gala debut, Tyla arrived in a floor-grazing gown by Balmain, featuring a full body-cast design. The sculpted garment was so snug that Tyla found it challenging to climb the museum’s iconic steps all by herself. But let’s give a round of applause to the Met handlers. Help arrived just in time.

She was literally carried and transported to a platform. Within seconds, she was back to her A-game, pausing and posing for the cameras like a queen. Here’s a glimpse of the moment:

Well, not to be missed was The Water singer’s handheld hourglass inspired by “the sands of time”. It definitely complemented her unique Met outfit. She even made a major shift from her signature bouncy curls to a sleek, layered bob cut. To accessorise her outfit, she wore a gold and diamond choker. And the cat eye was sharp enough to “kill” us. If you thought that was all, take a moment to look at her nails. They were dripping with jewels attached by chains.

Speaking with Vogue during the red carpet livestream, Tyla said she “wanted something out of the box this year.” The 22-year-old added, “I just love the outfit and how everything turned out.”

What was the inspiration behind Tyla’s standout Met Gala outfit? According to Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing, the dress, which came in three colours of sand and was mixed with micro crystal studs, was inspired by a “desire to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece.”

The French fashion designer further said that the idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited his imagination and he was more than happy with the end result.

Just before walking the red carpet, Tyla said she was excited and a little nervous, but she was looking forward to having a fun night at the Met. The fashion’s biggest event was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
