Director Pa Ranjith’s much-anticipated film Thangalaan was released on the big screens on August 15, 2024, and attained positive reviews. However, it tanked at the box office with a disappointing collection of Rs 72 crore. The film’s OTT release which was to happen September 20 has also been delayed.
Recently, in an interview with Pinkvilla, producer Gnanavel Raja addressed rumours of the delay of the film’s OTT release being caused by financial turmoil. He said, “They (Netflix) scheduled the release for Deepavali (Diwali). They wanted a festival release since Thangalaan is a big film. However, our favourite YouTubers are claiming that there are some issues with Thangalaan. They have a knack for claiming that there is an issue when in reality, there isn’t any.”
Headlined by the actor Vikram, Thangalaan was lauded by the audience for brilliant action sequences and acting. The film’s ensemble cast also starred Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathy and others in important roles. Studio Green and Neelam Productions have backed this film.
After Sarpatta Parambarai (2021), Thangalaan is Ranjith’s second-period drama. The film goes even further back in time to the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) of colonial India. Thangalaan narrates that history from the KGF’s perspective of indigenous communities.
At the audio launch of his film, Ranjith thanked the cast for their valuable contributions. He also talked about Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s impact on his life and work. According to the Thangalaan’s director, he is nothing without Babasaheb Ambedkar. The 41-year-old director said that he wanted to say his thanks to him. According to him, it was Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar who pushed him to speak for his people and has brought him to this stage today. Ranjith concluded by saying that he will continue to be Babasaheb Ambedkar’s voice, student and disciple.
Apart from Thangalaan, Ranjith is looking forward to his next film Vettuvam headlined by Ashok Selvan. Actors Dinesh and Arya will also play important roles in this project. Backed by Golden Ratio Films and Neelam Studios, this film is currently in the pre-production stage. Currently, other aspects related to this film are not disclosed to the public.
