Vir Das is set to make history as the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. The comedian made the exciting announcement on his social media, following his earlier win at the International Emmys for his stand-up special Vir Das: Landing. In the lead-up to the November event, Das is calling on new and emerging designers to create his outfit for the show. This isn’t the first time he’s opted for fresh talent over established designers, having done the same for his previous Emmy appearances.
On Sunday, Das took to Instagram to share his vision for the outfit, encouraging budding designers to step forward. “Alright folks. I’m going to be the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. I’m going to wear something Indian from home. I’m also not going to wear a fancy designer. They have enough cash and clients. So we’re gonna launch someone new,” he wrote, urging designers to submit their work via email.
He added further details about the requirements: “This is super duper ultra formal wear at a very high level for a very large audience. You have to make me look good in formal wear… It HAS TO BE INDIAN OR INDO-WESTERN FUSION. I do not need a tuxedo… We will pay you for your work, pay for the outfit, and credit you.”
The prestigious gala will take place on November 25 in New York, where Das will return as host. While the honor is significant, Das remains calm, stating he’s “pretty chill” about the opportunity. “I’ve known about it for a few months. The expectations are high and I’ll celebrate if I get it right… The jokes will be a mix of things – it will be a few weeks after the American elections, enough things would’ve happened in the world,” he told Mid-day, noting that he’s excited to tailor his performance to the diverse audience of nominees and content creators.
