Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025. Directed by Kiran Rao and co-produced by Aamir Khan, the film was released earlier this year and received warmly. It features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. This Oscar nomination comes just days after Kiran Rao revealed her dream of having “Laapataa Ladies” at the Oscars. The film is targeting a nomination for Best Foreign Film. Members of The Film Federation of India announced this decision at a gathering in Chennai, confirming Laapataa Ladies as India’s official submission for the 97th Academy Awards.
In August, Aamir Khan and his former wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, had a meaningful chat with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud after a special screening of the film at the Supreme Court. The screening, part of a gender sensitization program, was attended by several judges.
During their conversation, Aamir shared that his decision to produce Laapataa Ladies came from both “fear and desire.” Reflecting on his career, he said that it came when he realized it was the last leg of his career. He had said, “During COVID, at the age of 56, I realised this is the last leg of my career. I might have 15 more years of active work left, and I wanted to give back. The industry, society, and country have given me so much. I thought I could do one film a year, but as a producer, I can back multiple stories that I feel strongly about.”
Aamir had said that through producing, he can provide a platform for new writers, directors, and everyone involved in the process. “Laapataa Ladies is the first step in that direction. I want to promote this kind of talent and hope to produce four to five films a year so that we can see more such movies,” he had explained.
Meanwhile, Kiran Rao, on the Oscar entry, said, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the selection committee and to everyone who believed in this film. It is indeed a great privilege to be selected from among such amazing Indian films this year – who are equally worthy contenders for this honour.”
