The Kabir Khan directorial is a biopic on a real-life hero, India’s first Paralympic gold medalist, Murlikant Petkar. Born on November 1, 1944, in the Peth Islampur area of Sangli, Maharashtra, Petkar (77) is a war hero and India’s first Paralympic gold medalist.
Murlikant was a jawan in the rank of craftsman in the Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) Corps of the Indian Army. He was also a boxer at EME in Secunderabad. During the war against Pakistan in 1965, he suffered several bullet wounds, nine to be exact. After recovering from his wounds, Petkar decided not to give up and took up swimming and other sports.
Murlikant participated in the 1968 Summer Paralympics in table tennis and made it past the first round. The war veteran went on to win several international medals, making his feat one of the greatest in the history of Indian sports. Murlikant is India’s first-ever Paralympics gold medallist. The veteran won gold in the 50m freestyle (swimming) in Heidelberg, Germany in 1972 with a then-world record time. He also participated in the javelin throw and slalom at the same games. Later, in his mid-50s, Murlikant Petkar was employed by TELCO in Pune. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2018.
