Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor got married on April 14 last year in an intimate ceremony amid close family and friends in their Mumbai home. Unlike most brides who opt for a lehenga for this special day in their lives, Alia chose to wear a saree with a dupatta. Her look went viral on social media and the actress has now addressed it in a new interview.
Speaking to Vogue Singapore, Alia said, “I love a saree. It’s the most comfortable garment in the world, which is why I wore one for my wedding and not a lehenga.” Alia added, “You should celebrate the side of you that you feel is leading in that moment—whether that’s a saree, a super easy street-style vibe or an over-the-top gown.”
The actress added, “I believe the beauty of being a woman is that you can wear all these different clothes all the time. I can wear a pantsuit. I can wear a gown. One of the strongest aspects of this is that our wardrobe is so dynamic. I think that’s a great thing and one should celebrate it.”
For her day wedding with actor Ranbir Kapoor, Alia had opted for an ivory saree with gold details. She accessorised her look with heavy Kundan jewellery and let her hair flow naturally. Alia opted for a simple makeup look for the day and maintained that simplicity even in her henna design.
Recently, white and pastel-themed day weddings have become the new trend in Bollywood. In late September, actress Parineeti Chopra got married to Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha in a white-themed day ceremony in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
When the photos first surfaced online, netizens quickly drew comparisons between Alia and Parineeti’s looks, saying that the latter had copied that Gangubai Kathiawadi star. However, recently, Parineeti’s stylists clarified that though the actress’ lehenga appeared ivory in the initial photos, in reality, it was golden in colour.
