It was just a couple of days ago when the alleged drug scandal involving actor Lee Sun-Kyun of the Oscar-winning film Parasite, left the Korean Entertainment industry shocked. The latest development in the news suggests that Lee Sun-Kyun’s actress wife Jeon Hye-jin, reportedly had to sell a building to cover up blackmailing fees for the Parasite star, as per Koreaboo. Lee Sun-Kyun has now broken his silence on the matter by issuing an official statement through his legal representatives on Monday, October 23. It is claimed when Yonhap News contacted his agency regarding the building sale, the actor’s rep dismissed the speculation.
Notably, the blackmailing fees was rumoured to be given to a drug dealer in the case, who was allegedly threatening the Parasite actor for his status and image. The representative of Lee Sun-Kyun reportedly clarified the sale of the alleged building has nothing to do with the ongoing drug scandal.
South Korean police authorities have launched an investigation against eight people, including the Parasite actor. It is alleged the accused were involved in consuming illicit drugs multiple times this year. The officials are currently assessing the actor’s partake in illegal activities, however, the substances he is accused of consuming remain unknown yet. The extortion angle to the case was brought to light by Lee Sun-Kyun himself, who has reportedly filed a blackmailing complaint against one of the accused in the matter. The development suggests the Parasite star has already given several thousands of dollars to the alleged extortionist.
In the wake of the investigation, the actor’s agency HODU&U Entertainment has issued a vague statement claiming they’re “diligently” complying with the investigation. “We are currently checking on the accurate facts about the suspicions raised towards Lee Sun Kyun. We plan to diligently and truthfully comply with the inspectors and investigations that will be carried out in the future,” said the company, as per Koreaboo.
Following the drug controversy, Lee Sun-Kyun was removed from his upcoming drama No Way Out. The product team of the drama in an official statement confirmed his departure claiming, “It will take a considerable length of time for this situation to be cleared up, leading to him dropping out of the show.”
The makers emphasized the decision was taken amicably in agreement with the actor and his agency. The product of No Way Out is underway and will not be postponed. But who will replace Lee Sun-Kyun remains unclear.
The details of the release schedule of his upcoming roles in The Land of Happiness, Project Silence, and Apple TV+’s Dr. Brain also appeared to have been jeopardized.
