This week, Karan Johar returned with a highly anticipated episode of Koffee With Karan 8 featuring Bollywood icons Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan. In a candid exchange during the talk show, director Karan Johar delved into Saif’s impromptu marriage to his former spouse, Amrita Singh. Saif’s decision to tie the knot at the age of 20 took not just the film industry but also his family, particularly his mother Sharmila, by surprise. The secret wedding in 1991 left Sharmila somewhat hurt as Saif informed her about it a day after their union. During the episode, the mother-son duo candidly discussed Saif’s college days and shed light on his first marriage and separation with Amrita.
When Saif Ali Khan Confessed about Amrita Singh
The veteran actress recalled the time when Saif first told her about Amrita and shared, “I was visiting Mumbai for something, Saif came to me and said, ‘I have something to tell you.’ And then he told me (about Amrita Singh). I don’t know what I was doing but I was quiet and I said, ‘Okay, we’ll talk about it later, not now.’ After he left, I rang Tiger and told him and then we left it at that,’ and I said, ‘I’d like to meet her.’ We had tea or something and we chatted. I liked her but I was still quite shocked.”
Talking about Sharmila’s reaction, the Adipurush star recalled, “She was supportive when I did it. I actually remember, she’s told a very nice version of this but she told me, ‘I believe you are living with someone and you are doing something.’ So I said yes and she said, ‘Well, just don’t get married.’ And I said, ‘I got married yesterday.’ And a big tear fell out of her eye and she started crying. I felt that u really hurt, she said, you’ve really hurt me. Why didn’t you tell me’.”

Sharmila mentioned that both Saif and Amrita shared a great sense of humour and claimed that the conversations between them were filled with laughter. They often engaged in mimicry, teasing others in a lighthearted and humorous manner. Sharmila highlighted Saif’s talent in mimicry, stating that he was particularly skilled at it. She also praised Amrita as an excellent storyteller and highlighted that the couple were visibly content and happy together.
Saif Ali Khan Appreciating Amrita Singh
Saif Ali Khan further expressed his appreciation for Amrita Singh and discussed his divorce, mentioning that his mother, Sharmila Tagore was the first person he confessed about his separation even before he spoke to Amrita about it, which provided him with significant comfort during that challenging time. Saif acknowledged his respectful relationship with Amrita and highlighted the importance of maintaining respect despite the divorce. He shared the difficulty of such situations, particularly for the children involved.
Sharmila Tagore On Maintaining Relationship
Sharmila said, “When you’re together for such a long time and you have two lovely children. Then no break up is easy. And then, if it’s not harmonious. I tried having a relationship with Amrita but she needed time to cool down and they worked it out together. It’s not just staying away, there are so many other things that are involved.”
She mentioned that it was a challenging period for their family because Saif and Amrita’s separation happened when their son, Ibrahim, was just three years old. She expressed how attached they were to the children, particularly Tiger, who had a special fondness for Ibrahim. Losing Amrita and being separated from the children was emotionally difficult for them all, she added.
