Legendary singer Pankaj Udhas has passed away. He was 72 years old. The news was shared by his family. In a statement, they said, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhar on February 26, 2024, due to a prolonged illness.” The news has come as a shock to many. Singer Sonu Nigam was among the first ones to react to his death.

Not many are aware that actor John Abraham regarded the ghazal singer as his mentor, attributing his success to him. During the challenging phase of his career, John featured in the music video for Udhas’ song Chupke Chupke and always acknowledged the singer as his guiding force. During a 2012 event, John had said, as quoted by NDTV, “I look at sir (Pankaj Udhas) as a mentor because when I came into this industry as a model, the first person who graciously accepted me in his music video was sir.” He had added, “With Chupke Chupke he is the one man who is more than responsible for my success.”

The news of his passing away has come as a shock to many. Singer Sonu Nigam was among the first ones to react to his death. Taking to his Instagram account, Sonu wrote, “One of the most important part of my childhood, is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti.”

Pankaj Udhas was a renowned ghazal singer. He created heart-touching songs that topped ghazal playlists. Starting with Aahat in 1980, his hits like Mukarar and Tarrannum dominated charts. Inspiring novice singers, he mentored John Abraham, offering him a chance in a music video. Pankaj’s voice graced memorable Hindi songs like Chitthi aayee hai from Naam. Recognised for his contributions to ghazal and philanthropy, he received the Padmashree in 2006. Pankaj Udhas released several albums and hosted many live concerts over the years which amplified his popularity. May his soul rest in peace.
