Malayalam films have slowly but surely secured a special spot in the hearts of movie enthusiasts. Be it their gripping storylines or the hard-hitting performances of the cast, Mollywood is going places with its quality content. Take for example director Jude Anthany Joseph’s thriller drama 2018, based on the catastrophic effects of the Kerala floods. Starring Tovino Thomas in the lead, the film was a visual masterpiece, with several emotional elements and a nail-biting plot at the end. Now, with 2023 coming to a close, let us take a look at some highly-anticipated Malayalam films, expected to release in 2024.
Aadujeevitham
Helmed by Blessy, Aadujeevitham stars Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead. Also titled The Goat Life, the survival drama will tell the real-life story of an Indian migrant worker named Najeeb Muhammad. After visiting Saudi Arabia to make a living, he finds himself ensnared in a slave trade, herding goats in the middle of a desert. The film will premiere on April 10.
Abraham Ozler
Starring Jayaram in the lead, alongside Mammootty, Abraham Ozler is a crime thriller, directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas. The movie revolves around the personal and professional life of a veteran ACP in Trichur who once took the responsibility of hunting a serial killer. Abraham Ozler will hit the big screens on January 11.
Malaikottai Vaaliban
This Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial is a period-action drama narrating the story of a legendary man who shows the path to future generations. Mohanlal will be seen in a new avatar for the film, scheduled to release on January 25. Sonalee Kulkarni has been roped in as the female lead.
Barroz
Mohanlal has been taking up interesting projects back to back. He will be marking his debut directorial with Barroz — a fantasy action-adventure following the journey of a 400-year-old spirit of the same name. The entity has been waiting for decades to hand over a treasure to an unnamed descendant of D’Gama. Barroz is based on a novel titled Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, written by Jijo Punnoose. The film is slated to hit the silver screens on March 28.
Kathanar – The Wild Sorcerer
Kanthanar is a story about a legendary priest named Kadamattathu Kathanar who possesses supernatural powers. The horror fantasy is helmed by Rojin Thomas and stars Jayasurya and Anushka Shetty in the lead. The first part of the movie will release sometime around mid-2024.
Bramayugam: The Age of Madness
Mammootty’s first look from this Rahul Sadasivan directorial has rightfully grabbed multiple eyeballs. He was captured in a black-and-white frame, sporting a dangerous smile, and flaunting his beefed-up body. The release date of Bramayugam is yet to be decided.
Khalifa
Not much is known about this drama film, except that Khalifa will be directed by Vysakh with Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead. According to reports, some parts of the film, touted to be an action entertainer, will be shot in Dubai. The release date is yet to be announced.
Nadikar Thilakam
Nadikar Thilakam is a comedy film, headlined by Tovino Thomas. As per IMDb’s plot description, the film will document the life of superstar David Padikkal and the twist to fate he faces. Directed by Jean Paul Lal, the makers have not revealed Nadikar Thilakam’s release date.
Hanuman Gear
Fahadh Faasil will once again showcase his acting prowess in this Sudheesh Sankar film centering around a man who likes to embark on off-road drives. However, whenever he faces a problem, he uses a mysterious tool named Hanuman Gear to get out of trouble. The film is still in the pre-production phase and is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
