Ford has teamed with Reviver to become the first carmaker to give digital licence plates to its customers.

Ford is the first carmaker to provide digital licence plates to its consumers. Ford has signed an agreement with the California-based company that makes Reviver an official Ford Accessory Partner.

The firm has teamed with Reviver to provide this revolutionary addition to Ford’s official catalogue. Customers will now be able to acquire the RPlate either at a Ford dealership or through the brand’s online website.

According to CarScoops, this deployment will initially be limited to 300 Ford dealers in jurisdictions where the RPlate has been approved for customer usage, such as Arizona, California, and Michigan. While the plates are now limited to business and governmental fleets in Texas, they are legal in all 50 US states, Canada, and Mexico.

Customers can benefit from a number of features provided by the RPlate. Its customised e-Ink screen gives the automobile a distinct monochrome design, and users may put personalised messages on the licence plate. Furthermore, the plate has features such as automatic renewal through a mobile app, which eliminates the need for stickers, as well as real-time warnings in the event of theft or vehicle movement.

Reviver has priced the RPlate at $599 (about Rs 49,000), with an annual service plan for $75 (roughly Rs 6,000). A hardwired plate is also available for $749, with a $150 (about Rs 62,000 and Rs 12,000) installation charge and a $95 (approximately Rs 7,000) annual service plan. Additionally, the battery on the user-installed type is projected to last five years, while the hardwired alternative is intended for commercial cars, reports add.

“To be associated with a landmark brand in the automotive industry such as Ford is truly gratifying,” Reviver’s founder Neville Boston said as per CarScoops. “We are very proud to have met the rigorous requirements for the company’s evaluation of potential suppliers and look forward to adding the innovations of digital license plate technology to their offerings,” Boston added.

Ford has a history of appropriating great aftermarket technology and elevating it to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) status. This latest instance is no exception.

Reportedly, car ownership is increasingly being digitised, and digital titles have been accessible in around 20 US states for more than two decades. Companies such as Reviver and Champ Titles are attempting to simplify the process by reducing paperwork and enhancing efficiency.

We can expect more advancements in the digitalisation of automobile ownership as technology improves, such as completely configurable banner messaging, virtual wallet capabilities, and countrywide digital tolling.
