India reclaim top spot with 302-run win over Sri Lanka, secure passage into semifinals, South Africa second, Australia third and New Zealand are fourth.

India secured their passage into the semifinals of the ODI World Cup 2023, with a massive 302-run win over Sri Lanka. Mohammed Shami picked up a fifer as India returned to the top spot in the ODI World Cup 2023 points table after keeping their winning run going. A seventh win in a row helped India reach 14 points as they became the first team to reach the semifinals.

The first semifinal spot is booked, while the race for the remaining three semifinal places remains open.

Sri Lanka slipped to seventh place in the World Cup points table, but despite the crushing defeat, they can mathematically still qualify for the semifinals but will have to win their remaining two matches.

South Africa are in second place in the points table, with 12 points from seven matches, and look favourites for the second semifinal place.

Australia are in third place with 8 points from six matches, having won their previous four games, and look favourites for the third semifinal spot.

New Zealand’s drop in form has made the fourth semifinal spot one to grab as the Kiwis have lost three matches in a row. Once they were fighting it off with India for the top spot, but after losing to India, the Black Caps have lost to Australia and South Africa, as they slipped to fourth place.

The Kiwis are in seventh place with 8 points on the board, and their Net Run-Rate (NRR) stands at +0.484.

Pakistan are in fifth place, and their next fixture against New Zealand could well decide which team will remain in contention for the final semifinal spot.

Babar Azam and Co. have six points from seven games, and their NRR stands at -0.024.

Afghanistan will be in action on Friday as they take on the Netherlands, with the Afghans hoping for a late push for the fourth spot. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Co. are in sixth place, with six points they are level with Pakistan, but trail by NRR.

Sri Lanka meanwhile have dropped to seventh place, they have just four points from seven games, with NRR of -1.162, and they have two games remaining but they will also need other sides to drop points for them to make it into the semifinals.

The Dutch are on eighth place, they can make it into the semifinals, with just four points from six matches, they will be hoping to make a late push by beating the Afghans, and they will also hope to finish in the top seven to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Bangladesh are ninth, they have two points from seven matches, and they will hope to push to finish in the top seven places to reach the Champions Trophy. Similarly, England are rock bottom, they have just two points but with three games in hand, their aim will also be to remain in the race for the Champions Trophy.
