Mitchell Marsh Out of World Cup Indefinitely; Flies Home For Personal Reasons

In another big blow to their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign, Australia will be missing the services of allrounder Mitchell Marsh, who is flying home to Perth for personal reasons with no timeline for his return.

This comes after premium allrounder Glenn Maxwell was ruled out of the team’s next game against England on Saturday.

“A timeline on his return to the squad is to be confirmed,” read a Cricket Australia release. It is also unclear whether a replacement player will be sought by the Australian team. And as it stands now, Marsh is out of the World Cup indefinitely.

Marsh was a vital cog in the Australian batting line-up and in the absence of Travis Head had taken on the opening duties alongside David Warner. While Head returned to the top of the order with a scintillating century against New Zealand in a close win in Dharamsala, Marsh was moved down to No.3 scoring 36 runs. He also bowled two overs for 18 runs.

After a slow start to the campaign – 0 and 7 (vs India and South Africa), Marsh hit his stride with a 52 against Sri Lanka and 121 against Pakistan.

With Maxwell also ruled out due to concussion, Australia will now be scrambling to replace two allrounders in the playing XI for the crucial tie against England. Australia, with four wins in six matches, are currently placed third on eight points, level on points with New Zealand (8 points) and a win against England is vital to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
