Mohammed Shami became India’s leading wicket-taker in the history of the ODI World Cup, surpassing the likes of Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath after his fifer against Sri Lanka. Khan and Srinath had 44 wickets to their name, the highest by an Indian player, but Shami’s 45 wickets in just 14 innings is a massive feat.

Shami has picked up 14 wickets in the World Cup 2023, in just three matches, but since his ODI debut in 2013, he has been unplayable in the World Cups.

Here’s the full list of all the 45 wickets Mohammed Shami has taken in World Cup history:

The Bengal pacer made his World Cup debut in 2015 against Pakistan and picked up a four-wicket haul on his bow. In the following game, Shami got two wickets against South Africa, and in the next outing against West Indies, the veteran pacer got three wickets.

Against Ireland, Shami got three wickets again, followed by another three-wicket haul against Zimbabwe. In the 2015 World Cup quarterfinal against Bangladesh, Shami picked up two wickets but he failed to open his account against Australia in the semifinal as India crashed out of the tournament. In total, the 33-year-old picked up 17 wickets in the 2015 edition.

Fast forward four years, Shami played just four matches during the ODI World Cup 2019 in England. In his first outing against Afghanistan, Shami picked up four wickets and followed it up with another four-fer against West Indies.

Against the hosts England, Shami registered a fifer, before he came up with just a solitary dismissal against Bangladesh but didn’t feature in the remaining matches of the tournament. In total, he amassed 14 wickets during the 2019 World Cup.

Similarly, Shami didn’t play the opening four matches in the 2023 World Cup, but once he got the chance to play against New Zealand, the star pacer proved his value in gold with a fifer against the Kiwis.

It was a Man of the Match performance from the pacer, and in the next match, Shami picked up four wickets, followed by another fifer and a second Man of the Match award against Sri Lanka. With just three matches in the ongoing World Cup, Shami has taken his tally of wickets to 14, as he became India’s leading wicket-taker in World Cup history.

Overall, Australia’s Glenn McGrath is the bowler with the highest wickets in World Cup history with 71 dismissals to his name.
