Special Session of Parliament: The Centre has lined up a special discussion on the “Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha

The five-day special session of the parliament is set to begin on Monday. This special session is likely to begin with a discussion on the 75-year journey of the Indian Parliament, since the first time it met in December 1946 before the Independence.

Ahead of the special session of the parliament, the Centre has released a tentative agenda for the proceedings. An all-party meeting was held on Sunday to brief the leaders and hear their opinions amid a buzz on whether it will have some surprise item up its sleeve during the five-day sitting from September 18 to September 22.

Several parties, including from the ruling and opposition sides, made a strong pitch for tabling and passage of the women’s reservation bill.  Several leaders said the long-pending bill should be tabled and hoped that it can be passed with consensus.

Parliament Special Session: What’s on Agenda

The special session will witness the formal shifting from the old Parliament building to the new one on September 19, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Apart from that, four key bills, including changes in a Bill to regulate the appointment, conditions of service, and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are also likely to be introduced in the Parliament.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said on the first day, the session will be held in the Old Parliament House. “Next day i.e. on 19th September, there will be a photo session in the Old Parliament, then at 11 am there will be a function in the Central Hall. After that, we will enter the new Parliament. Parliament session will start in the new Parliament on the 19th of September and regular government work will start from the 20th of September,” he added.

Discussion on the 75-year Journey of the Indian Parliament

The Centre has lined up a special discussion on the “Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha. This will include an analysis of Achievements, Experiences, Memories and Learnings” along with the presentation of five pending bills.

PM Modi is likely to be the first speaker in Lok Sabha during the special discussion on Parliament’s journey of 75 years starting from the “‘Samvidhan Sabha” (Constituent Assembly) while Piyush Goyal will be the first speaker in Rajya Sabha, top government sources said.

Special Session: Key Bills Likely To be Tabled

During the session, the government has listed the bill on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners to be taken up for consideration and passage.

Apart from this, the government will also present the ‘The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023’ and ‘The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023’ in Lok Sabha. Both the bills were passed by the Rajya Sabha during the monsoon session last month. The Post Office Bill, 2023’ has also been listed in the Lok Sabha business.

Special Session of Parliament: Who Are Attending?

A total of 24 parties of the INDIA Bloc have agreed to participate in the special session of the Parliament. Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has written to PM Narendra Modi and demanded discussion and debate on several issues including the current economic situation of the country.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Saturday demanded that the Women’s Reservation Bill be passed during the upcoming special session of Parliament.
