Virat Kohli Suffers Heartbreak, Misses 49th ODI Ton Again; Wait Continues to Equal Sachin Tendulkar's Record | WATCH
Virat Kohli was dismissed on 88 versus Sri Lanka, as he missed on his 49th ODI century having fallen for 95 against New Zealand as well.

Virat Kohli came ever so close to equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries in ODI cricket but fell short by 12 runs as he was dismissed on 88 against Sri Lanka. India locked horns with Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, November 2. It looked as if the stars had aligned that Kohli would go on to match Tendulkar’s tally of 49 ODI tons in front of the legend himself, however, it was not to be.

Virat had earlier came agonisingly close to equalling Sachin’s record against New Zealand in Dharamsala but the 34-year-old was dismissed on 95, and after a forgetful outing against England, Kohli was dismissed on 88 and he is still stuck on 48 ODI centuries.

The former Indian captain will now hope to bring up his much-anticipated 49th ODI century on his birthday, when India take on South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 5.

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli’s 193-run partnership brought India right back in the contest, after Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal. However, Gill also missed his ton as he was dismissed on 92, while Virat’s luck ran out on 88.

At one stage in the game, it seemed like the 34-year-old would get to the coveted 49 ODI centuries mark, however, in the 32nd over of India’s inning, Madushanka surprised Virat with a slower delivery and the former India captain ended up giving away a catch to Pathum Nissanka.

The entire Wankhede Stadium was stunned in silence, and shortly afterwards when Kohli made the long walk back to the dugout, the fans gave him a standing ovation for another wonderful show.

India meanwhile ended up scoring 357/8 in their fifty overs, as Shreyas Iyer also missed out on a well-deserved century. Iyer scored 82 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja put the finishing touches on India’s total, with a knock of 35 runs.

Sri Lanka were thus given a massive target of 358 ton chase to remain alive in the race for semifinals of the World Cup 2023.
