Guwahati: Opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Saturday announced its fourth list of candidates, including the names of four new contestants, for coming Assam assembly elections on April 4 and 11 next.
AGP president Chandramohn Patowary announcing the list of 26 hopefuls said he would contest from his old Dharmapur seat.
The prominent contestants in on Saturday's list include sitting MLAs Alaka Sarma (Nalbari), Manoranjan Das (Bhabanipur) and Gunindra Nath Das (Barpeta).
Former ministers Pabindra Deka Patsarkuchi, Moidul Islam Bora (Kamalpur) and Utpal Dutta (Lakhimpur) were also nominated by the party, Patowary said.
The nine new contestants included AGP's youth wing Asom Yuba Parishad central general secretary Manoj Saikia pitting him against Congress heavy weight minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Jalukbari constituency.
Former Guwahati Mayor Queen Ojha would contest from Guwahati East, he said, adding another first timer Montumoni Das would fight Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at Titabar.
Patowary said AGP would be fighting the polls with other regional parties and would not field candidates in Kokrajhar East and West, Sidli, Bijni, Udalguri, Paneri and Mazbat constituencies leaving them to its ally Bodoland Peoples
Progressive Front (BPPF).
All these constituencies have sitting MLAs from ruling Congress ally Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF).
So far, the names of 94 contestants had been announced, he said, adding the rest of the names would be made public within a day or two.
On the demand of party workers for former Chief Minister and Barhampur MLA Prafulla Kumar Mahanta to contest against Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain's at Samaguri, the AGP chief said Mahanta would decide in the next couple of days if he would contest from that constituency too.
