Ayodhya, Gorakhpur or Mathura? CM Yogi Adityanath Throws Hat in Ring for 2022 UP Polls, Says BJP to Decide Seat
A close aide of the CM said the move shows “confidence” and a sense of “leading from the front” at a time when Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati and Priyanka Gandhi are unlikely to contest.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is piling pressure on his political opponents Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to follow suit by reiterating that he will contest the upcoming state elections. Sources in the BJP said the likely seat is to be Ayodhya, Gorakhpur or Mathura.

Adityanath on Saturday in Lucknow said the party will decide from where he will contest polls. “If it is Ayodhya, it will become a symbolic fight with a big message in the state as Yogi has been long associated with the Ram Janambhoomi movement. Like PM Narendra Modi is now associated with Varanasi, CM Yogi will get associated with Ayodhya. The traditional option will be the Gorakhpur, his home seat, or Mathura from where CM Yogi had himself flagged off the recent BJP Jan Vishwas Yatra,” a senior BJP leader in Lucknow told News18.

A close aide of the CM said the move shows “confidence” of the leader and a sense of “leading from the front” at a time when Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are unlikely to contest the polls.

“Yadav has already said he will not contest the elections and he has never done so in the past and only contests parliamentary seats. Later his party had to clarify that no final decision has been taken,” the aide said. Mayawati has not contested elections for a long time while Priyanka Gandhi has been ambivalent on contesting an MLA seat.

Interacting informally with journalists in Lucknow on Saturday, the CM meanwhile said he was confident that BJP will again cross 300 seats in UP and that the tickets of some sitting MLAs may be cut. He also made light of Akhilesh Yadav’s recent announcement of free electricity if voted to power and that Yadav would have made the Ram Temple by now if he was in power. The CM said no one will believe Yadav who gave uninterrupted electricity to only four out of 75 districts in the state and the party which had fired upon kar sewaks.

On Priyanka Gandhi’s various promises for people in UP, the CM asked why she is not delivering such promises for people in Congress-ruled Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh first. “In 2017, BJP had fought the election on the plank of the failures of the SP government. This time we are in the fray with our achievements,” the CM said.

He also stressed on elections to be held on time and said the Election Commission of India (ECI) will take a decision on the same. An aide of the CM said BJP is confident of getting more than 40% votes in 2022.
