Patna: The Bihar government has decided on principle to modify VAT on diesel, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Tuesday.
"There will be reduction in the price of diesel in Bihar as the state government has decided on principle to modify the VAT rate on the fuel product," he told reporters.
A decision on modification of VAT rate on diesel will be taken in a day or two, Kumar said.
The Chief Minister reiterated demand for grant of special category status to Bihar to tide over economic backwardness and said that he will embark on 'Adhikar Yatra' from Betiah (West Champaran) tomorrow to mobilise public support on the issue.
Kumar said that he will postpone the tour for a day on September 20 next in view of the nationwide strike called by the NDA to oppose diesel price hike, FDI in multi-brand retail and rationing of subsidized LPG cylinders before resuming his tour to various districts.
On TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's threat to withdraw support to the UPA government for allowing 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail, Kumar said it was an internal matter of the UPA.
"The TMC's decision is an internal matter of the UPA," he said.
As as far as the NDA's stand on the FDI in multi-brand retail and diesel price hike was concerned, the Centre should roll back its decision on both issues as well as it should consider to increase the number of subsidized LPG cylinders for the consumers, he said.
Kumar said that the special status was the need as well as right of Bihar and the Centre should accord it for development of the state on the principles of integrated development of the country.
"Without development of Bihar, India cannot make it to the league of global powers," the Chief Minister said.
He said JD(U) has organized a 'Adhikar rally' at the Gandhi Maidan here on November four next to press for the special category demand and urged the people to turn up in large numbers to make the event a success.
